ST. Lawrence Too Strong For Mutoola, Buganda Royal; Jinja Lions Back On Track As Kiringente Win

The fourth outing of the FUFA beach soccer league emphasized the apparent gulf in strength between defending champions St. Lawrence University and the other teams in the league.

Arriving at FUFA technical center in fifth place on a cold Sunday, St. Lawrence brought Mutoola’s unbeaten run to an end before they humbled Buganda Royal to shoot up to third on the table with nine points after three matches.

Jinja Lions responded well to their short comings last time with two important wins over Kampala Junior Team and Wolves to hit the top with 12 points, while Kiringente BSC beat KJT to record their second victory this season.

St. Lawrence University produced a controlled performance to get a solid victory over Mutoola.

Following a tight contest in the opening moments of the match, the record four-time league champions took a 1-0 lead before the end of the first period through Sulaiman Ochero.

Ochero added a second in the second period before Brian Nkuubi and Rica Byaruhanga scored a goal each to put St. Lawrence 4 – 0 up in the third.

Mutoola battled to try and bring themselves back in the game. Simon Peter Kijjo eventually got them a goal but it came deep into the third period, it was too late to have any impact on the result as his side lost their first game of the campaign.

It was a routine win and an easy ride for St. Lawrence just when some people thought Buganda Royal would pose some resistance this time against the Davis Nnono side. Buganda Royal had lost the previous two meetings between the sides and the story remained the same here.

Tight marking: Baker Lukooya (right) is closed down by an opponent

Baker Lukooya set St. Lawrence rolling with two goals in the first period although Ambrose Kigozi struck for Buganda Royal to reduce the deficit before it ended but it proved to be a mere consolation.

Lukooya scored the only goal in the second period, and then stretched their lead with another strike in the final period before Brian Nkuubi trotted to a brace to seal their third victory this season in as many games.

Kampala Junior Team 3 – 5 Jinja Lions

Herbert Onyango (14) celebrate with Hussein Ssajjabbi after scoring against KJT

It was a productive Sunday for Jinja Lions as they returned to winning ways.

They took a 4-0 lead in the first period – scoring through Herbert Onyango and Nicholus Tamale, while Nicholas Mwere showed up with a brace.

KJT however threatened a comeback when they scored the next three goals in the game through – Alvin Ssekiziyivu, Ashraf Mugumira and an own goal by Fredrick Ngalo but Onyango completed his brace in the third period to put the game beyond their reach.
